Follow-the-sun has evolved to follow-the-talent. Managing a product thus has a true global perspective. Products increasingly are developed in virtual teams using agile set-up and gig economy practices. The success of a product or service depends on its product management. Recently software product management has moved closer to software development in its understanding that market decisions have technical impact, and vice versa. This research provides results from an empirical field study with twenty companies on software product management in its global context. The empirical study provides concrete practices to fertilize and evolve software product management in global teams and thus the success of products in terms of predictability, quality and efficiency. We show that with institutionalization of a consistent and empowered product management role, global product development benefits in terms of schedule, quality and duration.

Increasing functionality, multicore and black box integration of OEM software or park brake control supplied by third parties increased complexity of braking system development dramatically. Agile methods were introduced to handle increased complexity. With this first application of agile methods at ZF TRW we could prove feasibility and strong benefits of agile methods in safety critical system development (ASIL D), very large projects (> 150 engineers), and projects with very strong dependencies between HW (“ECU or HCU”) and SW. Improvements were observed in much faster flow of information, better alignment of decisions, and significant improvement in velocity and product quality. Product lines are an extremely important lever to control complexity and to achieve quality throughout. New applications are usually faster to market, if they have already been developed for a different market. Development, integration and production cost, and thus the overall product cost decrease. Due to the reuse and the lower proportion to integrate components, companies such as Robert Bosch, Siemens and Volkswagen have achieved efficiency gains of 10-30 %. For instance, we were able to reduce the cost of rework over the entire product life cycle by 20-50% with reuse-oriented requirements engineering. Our presentation shows industry experience with Stihl and offers guidance in the implementation of product line concepts with a focus on requirements engineering. We show how requirements are formalized so that dependencies and reuse concepts can be implemented early and consistently. Thus, the requirements are precisely formulated and are used to ensure consistency and completion. They can still be understood and validated by stakeholders of diverse backgrounds. Concrete results from the reuse concepts, the underlying chnage management and PREEvision tool support at Stihl are presented. We highlight experiences in setting up a product line concept in an existing product scope.

Functional safety and cyber security must be systematically developed and implemented in parallel. Currently this is often done in piecemeal, as industry standards and methods for safety and security are quite isolated from each other. This previously established separation of the two "disciplines" each with its own standards and procedures is not sustainable because of dependencies and mutual influences are overlooked. In addition, a separate procedure is inefficient because many functions have to be touched several times. Essential is an integrated approach for the development and verification of requirements in order to make these two quality requirements manageable. We show in this presentation the systematic and continuous development and implementation of safety and security requirements. Hella corporation illustrates the method and advantages of such combined safety and security approach using the example of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System). The article thus gives a good overview of the methodology and the art of integrated engineering for Safety and Cyber Security. At the same show our industry experience, as the methodology is implemented effectively. Many lessons learned from practical help to transfer in their own environment of the participants.

Others, such as customer satisfaction, are more opportunistic and become tangible in the form of lasting good customer relationships with further projects. Overall, our experience has shown that a doubling of the effort for Requirements Engineering towards10 per cent of project budget in the areas of methodology, processes, training and tool support will deliver project benefits of more than 20 percent. Requirements Engineering in safety-critical systems must systematically develop and evaluate requirements for functional safety and cyber security in parallel. Currently this is done in a piecemeal, because the industry standards for safety and security are still placed highly isolated from each other. This previously established separation of the two "disciplines" each with its own standards and procedures is not sustainable because of dependencies and mutual influences are overlooked. In addition, a separate procedure is inefficient because many functions have to be touched several times. An integrated approach for the development and verification of requirements is essential in order to make these two quality requirements manageable. Our presentation shows with practical industry experience of Vector and Hella how the dependencies and interactions between safety and security requirements in Requirements Engineering methodically and systematically be considered. First, we describe a practical approach to the safety requirements. On this basis we integrate development for security requirements. The advantages of an integrated safety and security requirements engineering methodology are illustrated tool based on a specific example.

Requirements Engineering is key success factor for developing critical systems. Traditional development processes, that achieve innovation and quality through a cumbersome process, are no longer appropriate. Innovation in increasingly complex systems under cost pressures and global competition requires continuous focus on value and cost. It starts with the requirements that are not "collected", but must be developed together with relevant stakeholders. Requirements engineering must therefore be enriched today with methods from Lean Management. Lean Requirements Engineering begins with a systematic elaboration of the actual needs and value. For example, misunderstood quality requirements create problems in usability and performance. Without a tight coupling and collaboration of product management and development the resuilting products do not match the market needs. Requirement changes are detected too late and lead to unnecessary rework and non-conformance cost. Since many processes due to the high combinatorial complexity and a rather low standardization and its ad-hoc nature are difficult to model, Requirements Engineering must massively support the Sales Function. We present experiences and benefits of Lean Requirements Engineering with projects at Siemens AG. We demonstrate with practical examples and industry experiences, how Lean Requirements engineering is implemented. Thus, the cost of rework can be reduced by approximately 30%. The experiences provided in this presentation can be transferred to other projects and environments.

Mostly the primary source of risks and later problems is insufficient coherence with requirements engineering methodology and collaboration between different business partners during the project. Our article at the IEEE International Conference on Requirements Engineering (RE09) based on experiences from various industries and projects provides insight into how to effectively collaborate in requirements engineering. Methods and tools are one side of the medal, but true collaboration also means having a platform to effectively and efficiently exchange requirements, specifications and their entire change management across impacted stakeholders. The Requirements Interchange Format (RIF) has quickly moved forward over the past two years first in automotive and currently starting in domains such as medical and aerospace. This presentation describes typical RE collaboration scenarios and what we recommend in order to mitigate risks and thus effectively manage complex supplier relationships. We will not “sell” any tool but rather indicate how RIF is applied in order to share, communicate and collaborate across different tools.

Functions such as adaptive cruise control, crash protection systems, active body control and ESP are increasing in complexity and taking an ever more active role in controlling the car. These functions are realized by systems of sensors, actuators and interconnected electronic control units. The systems must be designed to function under a variety of operating conditions and must adhere to a number of mechanical, hardware and software constraints. In order to be able to manage the emerging product liability risks associated with such systems as well as ensuring the high level of quality required of automotive systems, significant improvements to engineering processes are necessary. In this article, we describe our experiences in adapting companies’ development processes to conform to safety standards and to cope with the challenges mentioned above. We detail key success factors in overcoming these challenges and provide practical examples from working with global OEMs and tier-one suppliers on implementing safety standards in E/E development.

This article based on experiences from various industries and projects provides insight into how to effectively collaborate in requirements engineering. The Requirements Interchange Format has quickly moved forward over the past two years first in automotive and currently starting in domains such as medical and aerospace.
