Functional safety is gaining importance across different industries. The standard ISO 26262 has fast become an industry reference, way beyond automotive. Together with product liability it enforces a professional implementation of functional safety. This presentation at the Vector Congress provides an introduction to the principles and introduces the basic techniques for specification, analysis, verification and validation of functional safety. We will show with hands-on experiences from Vector Consulting Services how the standard is applied, and how processes and tools can support it. In particular we provide useful hints about the introduction of safety engineering in a company. Finally we provide an outlook on current trends such as security and functional safety, and the edition 2 of ISO 26262 to appear in 2016 as community draft.
